Traditional Systems of Medicine
Traditional systems of medicine utilize natural drugs primarily obtained from plants, animals, and minerals. These time-tested practices are extensively applied in India and various other countries, forming a significant part of their healthcare infrastructure. The major traditional systems include Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy.
Ayurveda
Ayurveda is recognized as one of the most ancient and holistic systems of medicine, originating in India. Its fundamental principle revolves around maintaining a harmonious balance within the body for optimal health.
According to Ayurveda, good health is contingent upon the equilibrium of three vital energies or doshas:
- Vata (air and space)
- Pitta (fire and water)
- Kapha (earth and water)
Ayurvedic treatments predominantly involve herbal medicines. Its applications extend to:
- Treatment of various diseases
- Maintenance of overall health and well-being
- Enhancement of natural immunity
Siddha System
The Siddha system of medicine is another ancient tradition, with its origins rooted deeply in South India. It posits that the universe and the human body are composed of five basic elements:
- Earth
- Water
- Fire
- Air
- Space
Siddha medicines comprise a diverse range of preparations:
- Herbal drugs
- Mineral drugs
- Metal preparations (e.g., purified mercury, sulfur)
Unani System
The Unani system, often referred to as Greco-Arab medicine, has its roots in ancient Greek medical traditions. It emphasizes the concept of maintaining a balance of body fluids, known as humors.
Health in the Unani system is governed by natural principles termed Umure Tabiya, which include elements like humors, temperaments, and faculties.
Unani medicines draw from various sources:
- Herbal drugs
- Animal drugs
- Mineral drugs
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded on a unique principle:
"Like cures like" – substances that cause symptoms in healthy individuals are used in highly diluted forms to treat similar symptoms in sick individuals.
A distinctive characteristic of Homeopathy is the use of very small doses of drugs. Homeopathic remedies are predominantly sourced from natural origins, including plants, minerals, and animal products.
Ayurvedic Formulations
Ayurvedic medicines are meticulously prepared into a wide array of dosage forms, each designed for specific therapeutic effects and administration routes.
Arista
Arista are distinctive fermented liquid preparations derived from plant materials. The process of fermentation enhances the extraction of active constituents and naturally preserves the formulation, making them potent and stable.
Asava
Asava are also fermented liquid preparations, but unlike Aristas, they are prepared without initial boiling of the herbal ingredients. The alcohol generated during the fermentation process plays a crucial role in extracting the medicinal compounds from the plant materials.
Gutika
Gutika refer to Ayurvedic medicines presented in the form of tablets or pills. They are meticulously prepared by thoroughly mixing powdered drugs with appropriate binding agents, then rolled or pressed into desired shapes.
Taila
Taila are medicated oils, typically prepared by infusing plant materials into a base oil (e.g., sesame oil). These formulations are widely utilized for topical applications, such as massage therapy, and for specific external treatments.
Churna
Churna are simple yet effective powdered herbal preparations. They are made by carefully grinding dried crude drugs into a fine powder, often a combination of multiple herbs, to be consumed directly or mixed with other carriers.
Lehya
Lehya are semisolid preparations, characterized by their jam-like consistency. They are formulated by blending powdered drugs with sweetening agents such as sugar, jaggery, or honey, making them palatable and easy to consume.
Bhasma
Bhasma are unique ash preparations, obtained through a sophisticated process of heating and calcining metals or minerals, often repeatedly with herbal juices. These highly potent preparations are administered in very minute doses due to their concentrated nature.
